Liverpool tipped to face huge competition for La Liga star

Liverpool are expected to get into the market in the January transfer window and try to bring in a new defensive midfielder for Arne Slot’s squad.

The Reds chased Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi hard and thought they had the player in the bag last summer but were delivered a brutal shock.

The Spain international, who was initially receptive to the move, eventually decided against leaving Real Sociedad despite interest from one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

Zubimendi was Liverpool’s top midfield target in the summer and the club abandoned the idea of signing another midfielder once the Spaniard rejected the transfer.

Jamie Carragher has backed Liverpool to rekindle their interest in the player in the winter window given he was the consensus target of the club’s recruitment team.

The former Red now feels Manchester City could be in for him

Manchester City’s form has dipped and they have lost three games on the trot in all competitions over the last week.

Rodri’s absence in the middle of the park is being felt and Manchester City are now expected to bring in a defensive midfielder in the winter window.

The Premier League champions have been linked with an interest in Zubimendi and Carragher conceded that the move would make sense.

The former Liverpool defender feels it would not be a surprise if Manchester City try to sign a player who is considered one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe to fill the gap left by Rodri.

“The void left by Rodri means City must consider the transfer market in January”, he wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph.

“I wonder whether they will try to succeed where Liverpool failed and lure Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the player whom top European scouts evidently feel is the best No 6 available beyond the Champions League clubs.

“Zubimendi is Rodri’s deputy in the Spain squad too.”

Zubimendi has said little since last summer to suggest that he is ready to leave Real Sociedad any time soon.

However, it remains to be seen whether the lure of playing for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City proves too much to ignore if the champions do move for him in the winter window.
