Liverpool have made a brilliant start to their season under new manager Arne Slot despite lacking an elite defensive midfielder in their squad.
The Reds are sitting pretty at the summit of the Premier League table with 15 points from their opening six league games at the start of the campaign.
Liverpool have also won both of their Champions League fixtures and are well-placed to reach the knockout rounds of Europe’s elite club competition.
Slot has managed to overcome the handicap of not having a top-class defensive midfielder by getting the best out of Ryan Gravenberch who has earned high praise for his performances at the start of the season.
Liverpool wanted to sign Martin Zubimendi and pushed hard to sign but the player decided against leaving Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window.
Zubimendi has opened about about rejecting Liverpool
The Spain international shares a deeply personal relationship with La Real and their fans and the lure of Liverpool was not good enough to convince him to leave the Anoeta.
The midfielder conceded that the speculation around his future was normal and he tried to make sure that he dealt with it in the possible method.
He is pleased with the decision he made in the end but admitted that all the noise surrounding his future at Real Sociedad did make him uncomfortable.
“In the end, like in every transfer window, things always come up. This summer it was my turn”, the midfielder told Noticias de Gipuzkoa.
“These are things that happen and you have to deal with them in the best way possible.
“It is true that I was a bit uncomfortable with everything, especially the noise, but in the end, I isolated myself and made the decision that I thought was the right one.”
Liverpool are planning to try and sign an elite number 6 in the winter transfer window and are prepared to sell Wataru Endo to part-fund the move.
