Liverpool have far failed to sign any of their midfield targets. Martin Zubimendi decided to stay with Sociedad and now, the Reds have also missed out on Teun Koopmeiners, who is heading to Juventus.
On Saturday, a story from TEAMTalk broke, claiming Liverpool were planning to gazump Juventus’ deal to sign Dutchman.
According to today’s edition of La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Juventus are expected to complete a deal with Atalanta with an announcement “expected from tomorrow.”
The Turin-based outfit have long since secured a long-term deal with the player himself and it now seems as though formalities with Atalanta will soon be wrapped up.
Juve are prepared to sanction an outlay of €60 million (£50.7m). This will be comprised of £46.6m (€55 million) up front wit the rest to be paid based on performance-related bonuses.
Liverpool have been left a bit redfaced in the transfer market this summer and may well end the window without any new additions to Slot’s inherited squad.
It’s possible the Dutch coach could exceed expectations and succeed without any new faces but the Premier League is extremely punishing and a lot will depend on how long the Reds can keep their most important players fit.
Liverpool may need to rely on current midfield options
With Liverpool missing out on key midfield targets like Martin Zubimendi and Teun Koopmeiners, attention now turns to the club’s current options for midfield depth.
Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo are more than adequate options, but the question remains whether these players are enough ahead of a gruelling Premier League campaign.
Ryan Gravenberch
The Dutch midfielder brings youth, versatility, and potential to the table. Having developed at Ajax and Bayern Munich, he has experience playing in a system that emphasises pressing and ball retention, which aligns well with Slot’s style.
His physical presence and technical skills offer promise, but his time at the Allianz Arena was underwhelming, with limited game time. Liverpool will hope that Gravenberch can rediscover his Ajax form and quickly adapt this new role under Slot.
However, relying heavily on a player who is still finding his feet could be risky, especially considering Liverpool’s high expectations.
Wataru Endo
On the other hand, Wataru Endo provides a contrasting profile. At 31, he offers experience and leadership, qualities that can be invaluable in high-pressure situations.
His defensive solidity and ability to break up play make him a reliable option in the holding midfield role.
While Endo may not possess the creative flair of some of Liverpool’s previous midfield stars, his disciplined approach could provide the stability that allows more attack-minded players to flourish. However, his age and the physical demands of the Premier League raise concerns about his ability to consistently perform at the highest level.
Ultimately, while Gravenberch and Endo are capable options, they might not completely fill the void left by Liverpool’s transfer disappointments.
The Premier League is unforgiving, and without proven, high-calibre reinforcements, Liverpool’s midfield could still be seen as a potential weakness.
