Liverpool sources close to journalist David Lynch have said that the “possibility is still there” for new signings to arrive at Anfield before the close of the summer transfer window.
By the end of the weekend, the Premier League transfer market will come to a close and after two months, Liverpool have yet to make a single addition to their squad for this season.
However, it’s not yet over.
Lynch, while speaking to Anfield Index, has revealed that his contacts at Anfield have affirmed the potential for transfers to be done by the Merseysiders before the Saturday deadline at midnight.
He said: “I asked someone about two or three days ago, someone close to the club, if you could rule it out now as there’s not a lot of time left in terms of incomings, and they said ‘No, don’t rule it out yet. It’s not at that point. There’s potential for additions to come in.’
“That possibility is still there; I just think the names are being kept very, very quiet at the moment.”
Encouraging news amid transfer standstill
Liverpool have appeared to be inactive this summer but things may pick up very quickly if these claims are true.
It’s not always the case that new signings equal silverware but not making any signings at all increases the likelihood that Liverpool will battle with an injury crisis again.
For a team so reliant on energy and effort, not adding to the squad is dangerous to say the least. If any of Liverpool’s midfielders or centre-backs suffer injury, it will have serious consequences for the whole squad.
The Reds have made a very good start to the season and will look to continue in the same vein when they face Manchester United 16 hours after the close of the transfer window.
The hope is that when Liverpool take to the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday, it will be with the comfort in knowing the squad has the strength in numbers to withstand all challenges this season.
