Liverpool captain Virgil Van Djik feels the team ‘must improve’ to keep their hopes up on all fronts. The Reds went into the international break on a terrible note with three straight losses.

Liverpool were flying high at the start of the season, winning five games in a row in the league. They also began their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns on a winning note. But things came crashing down soon after.

Trips to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea ended on a sour note, as chinks in their armour were left bare. The two Premier League losses causing them to slip to second place on the table.

Although the Reds will look to get things back on track, Van Djik had a note of caution for his team-mates.

Club captain Van Djik has been a leading figure for Liverpool. Widely regarded as one of the best defenders on the planet, his words hold weight at the club.

Under these circumstances he spoke to SkySports, feeling the need to improve to keep their edge. “It’s pretty clear we have to improve. Offensively, defensively, in possession.”, explained the veteran.

“You know, set pieces, but the matter of the fact is that we won 7 out of 10 games. And we still have so much to improve. So you can put it in the other way and put it in perspective and think. Listen, if we improve those things it could be a very special season,”, laying out the possibility at hand for the club.

Acknowledging the difficult period the Reds faced. Djik saw this as an opportunity to show what his team can really do on the pitch.

“We had a tough 7 days and we will have to deal with it internally on the pitch, especially and show it in the games ahead of us. We have every 3 or 4 days an opportunity to show it. This Sunday is another big opportunity.”

Difficult game against United

Manchester United’s visit to Anfield this Sunday will be their 100th. So far they have only won on 26 occasions. Ideally the Ducthman would like to keep things that way but says the game will be ‘difficult’.

‘I could say its a game on it own. It doesn’t really matter what kind of form any team is”, highlighting the old adage on how form is temporary.

“We drew twice in the last two seasons, and what we played away and we got knocked out in the FA Cup. That was pretty tough. So there are always game you know is always difficult”.

A win against their bitter-rivals will keep the pressure on Arsenal, while a win for Manchester United will see them come within two points of Anfield.
