Liverpool have made a game changing decision ahead of this summer.
The club have spent this season trying to tie down three key first team stars. And with months till the end of the season, none of them have committed long-term. The approach to their contracts has been handled poorly over the last few years. Liverpool and FSG have been reluctant to hand out new deals to the current squad; just this past year Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliot and Ibrahima Konate have had their contract talks stalled.
This is because Liverpool wanted to focus on Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk’s contracts. And now it looks to have backfired. This week, multiple reports have indicated that Trent is on the verge of signing for Real Madrid.

With Trent on his way out of the club, and the looming prospect of losing Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool are pushing to keep Ibrahima Konate. The French international has a year on his contract, and has been attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport that the reds see Konate as a priority heading into this summer:
“Liverpool insist on extending his contract, it’s one of the priorities for the club and they are working on it.”
This means the reds are going to focus on getting the 25-year old to stay at Anfield long-term. Konate has had a contract offer on the table since last year, and is yet to decide on his future. With the events of the past week, Liverpool are sure to push to conclude contract talks very soon.
Right decision from the reds
Losing Ibrahima Konate this summer would be disastrous. It would lead to serious complications ahead of next season. With the future of Virgil Van Dijk in the air, the club could easily lose a leader in their backline. Keeping Konate is key. His departure would mean the reds would go into next season with Jarrel Quansah as one of the two starting defenders. Any player signed to play in the backline would have a difficult time adjusting, especially with two veteran players having left the club.
Liverpool must do all they can to fight off competition for Ibrahima Konate. He is the future of the club’s defence, and has shown he can reach the level of the world’s best.
