Liverpool make enquiries for Lyon star and are close to first signing of the summer

Rayan Cherki

Liverpool have made enquiries over signing Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki but the 21-year-oid is more likely to sign a contract extension than make the switch to Anfield.

The Reds announced the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili on Wednesday morning but do not look set to follow that deal with a move to sign Cherki.

According to L’Equipe, Arne Slot’s side has made enquiries over what a deal to sign Cherki would look like but as things stand, it’s more plausible that he puts pen to paper on an extension to his current deal.

Without an extension, the Frenchman’s current contract will expire in June 2025 so it would prove to be a major win for Lyon to hold onto the midfielder. Last season, he scored three goals and provided nine assists.

What are Liverpool’s realistic transfer options before Deadline Day?

While Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Mamardashvili, the Italian goalkeeper will only join the club at the start of next season so will not be imminently moving to Merseyside.

With that in mind, Liverpool are still yet to make their first signing but have some opportunities to make additions to the squad for the 2024/25  season before the window slams shut at midnight on Saturday.

Federico Chiesa

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool will sign Federico Chiesa for “€13m initial fee with add-ons” on a four year contract and is set to fly to Liverpool today.

The most pleasing about this quickfire deal aside from the veritable quality Chiesa adds to the squad is that the player reportedly accepted the move to Liverpool “immediately.”

This is because one of the most important thing Jurgen Klopp did during his time at Anfield was refuse to have players in his side that don’t want to be there. Chiesa may have been pushed out the door somewhat but it’s good to know he is passionate about joining the Reds.

Centre-back and midfield

In terms of midfield and defensive signings, it’s not clear what the Reds’ plans to recruit in these areas are although it has been said they are keen to get players in for those positions.

Football Insider reported at the weekend that Liverpool are looking to see what they can do in these areas but we’ll have to see what happens in the next few days.
