Liverpool are set to complete a transfer but unfortunately, it’s not one that will have any bearing on this season with a €35 million deal to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili close to being done.
The shot-stopper is seen as a potential heir to Alisson Becker but will return to Valencia on loan this season before linking up with his new teammates next summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Mamardashvili was in Liverpool today for a medical.
He said: “Giorgi Mamardashvili to Liverpool, here we go!
“Medical today for Georgian goalkeeper as he’s joining #LFC from Valencia.
“The agreement for €35m package plus sell-on clause will be signed now but he will join Liverpool in July 2025.
“This season he’s staying in Valencia.”
Liverpool preparing for life after Alisson Becker
Now 31, Alisson won’t be at Liverpool forever even if he is nowhere near the age he will eventually retire. As such, it’s encouraging to see the Reds taking action to ensure his replacement is in hand when he does leave.
The Brazilian goalkeeper has three years remaining on his current contract. Without any further extensions, he is in line to leaver Anfield in July 2027.
This means Liverpool will have a couple of years to get Mamardashvili into shape to inherit the no.1 spot from Ali.
The former AS Roma goalkeeper has massively raised the standards for goalkeepers at the club after Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius failed to meet the requirements.
Alisson, however, is one of the biggest reasons behind the transformation under Jurgen Klopp. Alongside Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool went from top four hopefuls to European and domestic title winners.
