Liverpool give first team star five months to earn Anfield stay

Liverpool have planned multiple transfer decisions ahead of this summer, with some set to shock Reds fans.

The Reds have had a quiet January transfer window, with Arne Slot said to be ‘happy’ with the squad. Slot’s choice to rest nine key players midweek paid off in a big way on Saturday night. Liverpool beat Bournemouth 2-0 away from home, with Mohamed Salah scoring a brace.

The club now have another big fixture midweek, as they face Spurs in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. Arne Slot’s side have to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Anfield on Thursday night.

Liverpool are yet to resolve the futures of key players at the club.

This contract saga has dominated the headlines around Anfield this season. Despite the club performing on the field, the contract issues continue to make the news. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk are yet to sign new contracts. The trio are currently set to leave the club in the summer.

Another first team star could follow them out of the door. Liverpool have reportedly reached a decision on Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan striker has been out of favour under Arne Slot. He has been used off the bench for most of the campaign. Nunez was strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, but Al Nassr ultimately chose to sign Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran. During the January window, Liverpool made their stance clear that they would keep the 25-year old at Anfield.

A decision on Nunez will be made at the end of the season. The striker now has less than six months to justify his place at the club. The Uruguayan arrived at Anfield with a huge price tag, but has failed to deliver, despite some great performances from time to time.

What is Darwin Nunez’s future?

It is quite clear that Arne Slot prefers a central player who can be involved in play as part of his tactics. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have done a good job of that when they have played as the striker this season. However, Darwin Nunez offers the directness of a pure striker the team lacks in some situations.

A clear example was in the Brentford game, where he came off the bench to score a brace in a game the Reds found difficult to score. Liverpool have a big decision to make this summer.
