Liverpool eye ‘expensive’ Brazilian international

Liverpool are set to revamp the team this summer.

Arne Slot is set to finally be involved in signings ahead of next season. Liverpool signed just two permanent first team stars over the course of this season. Slot made good use of the current crop of players. He found solutions to multiple problems in the team, and his style of play has elevated some first team players.

Heading into next season, two major areas of the team have been identified as needing upgrades. The reds will be in the market for a new defender, and possibly a striker. With Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah set to leave when their contracts expire, the club will be in a rush to replace them.

Though reportedly not a priority, the midfield could be an area Liverpool could strengthen.

According to TBR Football, Liverpool and Spurs are monitoring Wolves star Joao Gomes. The Brazilian international has been a revelation in the Premier League over the last year as he brought dynamism to the club’s midfield. Gomes has reportedly caught the eye of multiple clubs. However, there is a huge stumbling block if any team decides to pursue him.

Joao Gomes recently signed an extension with Wolverhampton Wanderers till 2030. Any team interested in the 24-year old would have to pay a premium. The Brazilian put pen to paper a week ago, and Wolves boss Vitor Pereira sees him as an important contributor for the team:

“I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives every time 100 per cent, in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step.

“He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes, and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”

Pep Guardiola came out and praised Gomes after Manchester City played Wolves last year.

“I give a lot of credit because the balls and the patterns they have, the quality and the pace they have with Hwang [Hee-chan] and [Matheus] Cunha is dangerous. They have quality with Joao Gomes, with [Mario] Lemina. They have good quality with the ball.”
