Liverpool maintained their lead on top of the Premier League on Wednesday night.
After Arsenal’s win over Fulham on Tuesday, there was a bit of pressure on the reds heading into a huge Merseyside derby. On Wednesday night, the atmosphere truly felt like a big game with the home crowd buzzing. Liverpool played in front of a record crow on Wednesday night as the crowd reached 60,331 attendance – a new club record for the derby.
The game was very feisty from the first whistle. Just 11 minutes into the game a very controversial incident happened in the Everton half. James Tarkowski went into a dangerous challenge which left Alexis Mac Allister in a heap on the floor. The decision was reviewed on field and it was only given as a yellow card. Since the incident happened in front of the referee, no retrospective action can be taken.

Liverpool could face Jota problem this summer

In a high stakes game, Liverpool found it difficult to find a breakthrough against a well-drilled Toffees side. However, in the 57th minute, the reds broke the deadlock. It took a moment of perseverance and skill from Diogo Jota that lead to a goal. The Portuguese forward found himself on the end of a ball from Luis Diaz, and weaved his way through the defence before slotting past Jordan Pickford. Diogo Jota ended up scoring the only goal in a crucial 1-0 win.
Jota has been a great servant to the club and has popped up with a lot of crucial goals for the team. However, there is a high chance the Portuguese forward leaves this summer. In a report from Anfield Watch in February, it was revealed that Arne Slot was open to letting some of Liverpool’s attacking options go this summer. Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were the names likely to be made available when the window opens. The reason why the club would consider moving on from the Portuguese international is his injury record. Jota has only started 36 Premier League games since 2022.
However, his value to the team has been proven time and time again. Liverpool have a huge decision to make this summer.
