Liverpool faced Everton in another fiesty Merseyside derby.
Just like the reverse fixture, the game on Wednesday night was full of intensity and controversy. Mere minutes into the first half, James Tarkowski cleared a loose ball before dangerously lunging into Alexis Mac Allister. The referee and VAR deemed the challenge only a yellow after review.
The game ended with one goal, as Liverpool maintained their lead on top of the Premier League. Everton boss David Moyes said the reds were the better team on the night:
“Liverpool were the better team, but we showed great resilience, made some chances. It’s just gut-wrenching that we have lost to a goal that we don’t feel is deserved,”
“This is our first defeat in 10 games. Liverpool are the best team in the league. Maybe in the future, we’ll be a bit closer to them.”
Darwin Nunez started the game on the bench, but came on late in the second half to provide some energy when the game was getting flat. The Uruguayan has accepted his role in the team this season. Arne Slot is not a fan of the striker, and come this summer, Darwin Nunez could be set to leave Anfield. The 25-year old was involved in a controversial incident over 10 minutes into his second half substitute appearance.

Darwin Nunez incident explained

Late in the second half, Darwin Nunez chased down a long ball into the Everton box before being cleared out by Jordan Pickford. The incident was never reviewed because it happened after the referee had whistled for a foul on Dominik Szoboszlai back in the Liverpool half. Since the ball was not in play, the incident was not reviewed or taken into consideration by the referee in the game.
Nunez was treated on the pitch, and received a yellow card after being attended to by the medical team. According to the Premier League website, Darwin Nunez was booked after a ”delay” in the match. So its most likely that the Uruguayan was cautioned for time wasting. After legitimately being injured by Pickford, the striker rolled back onto the pitch after initially landing behind the touchline.
It has already been determined that Everton will not face any retrospective bans for the incidents during the game.
