Report: Liverpool appear to be on the cusp of making €69.4m offer to make much needed January signing

January has been a mixed bag for Liverpool as injuries, Covid-19 and AFCON have all made it difficult for Jurgen Klopp to field a team but the Reds could still shake things up with a new signing.

It seems unlikely but it is possible.

Jurgen Klopp has been strongly linked with a move for Porto’s Luis Diaz, who has 15 goals and 6 assists in all competitions this season.

According to A Bola, Liverpool appear to be on the cusp of making a huge offer to sign Dias this month and former Porto star Rodolfo Reis claimed that €69.4m (£58m) would be enough to bring him to Anfield.

The Colombian is highly-rated as his pace, dribbling and finishing have turned him into one of the most sought after attackers in the current market.

Lacklustre Arsenal display highlights need for more attacking firepower

After the 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg, Jurgen Klopp asked the journalists virtually present via Zoom to tell him about one team that wouldn’t miss the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

He asked: “Could we have been better prepared for it? I don’t think so.”

It’s difficult to agree after 36-year-old James Milner started in midfield ahead of Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with both midfielders playing way better off the bench.

It’s an infuriatingly out of touch response from the German given that Liverpool made just one signing last summer which really should have been made to replace Dejan Lovren the summer before while he totally failed to replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

So, yes, Liverpool could have been better prepared for the absence of Naby Keita and given that the club was aware that they would lose three top players for a month due to AFCON, they can have no complaints.

Bringing someone like Diaz in would make an immediate impact and while I would love to see it happen, given Liverpool’s recent track record and FSG’s apparent hatred for spending in the transfer market, I can’t see it happening.
