Liverpool are putting plans in place to secure signings for the first team in the winter transfer window as well as next summer.
The Reds want to be more aggressive in January after a lacklustre last summer and are keen to bring in a defensive midfielder in the winter window.
While strengthening Arne Slot’s first-team squad is a priority for the club, Liverpool are also working hard behind the scenes to secure the best young talents across European football.
Liverpool signed Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea, which has led to some burning of bridges between the two clubs due to the anger the Blues felt on losing the teenager.
The Merseyside giants are also on the lookout for the best young talents in Europe as well and Red Star Belgrade winger Andrija Maksimovic is one of the players the club are closely tracking.
Manchester City are also chasing him but there were claims that Borussia Dortmund have had informal talks with Red Star Belgrade over signing him.
However, there are suggestions that Liverpool could be closer to signing him than previously anticipated.
Liverpool ahead of Dortmund in race for ‘Serbian Messi’
Maksimovic recently played in the Champions League for Red Star Belgrade and even became the youngest player to earn a cap for Serbia.
German journalist Christian Falk has claimed that Dortmund are definitely tracking the player but they are not pushing hard to sign him at the moment.
He stressed that Liverpool and other English suitors are closer to signing Maksimovic than Dortmund and he is not a priority target for the German giants.
Falk told CaughtOffside: “Dortmund see Andrija Maksimovic, 17, as one of the next big jewels in football – like they saw in Jamie Gittens for instance. But it’s not so concrete at the moment that they’re planning on buying him.
“Liverpool and other clubs who are interested are perhaps closer. In Dortmund, they are discussing the name but it’s not so hot at the moment, so not the next one they’re going to buy.
“We’ll see how close the English clubs will get to this deal, but Dortmund are not at the starting line at the moment.”
