Liverpool almost completed £75M signing but had one problem

Liverpool were reportedly very close to completing a move to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United which would have seen Joe Gomez head the other way.

Neither Gordon nor Gomez completed a transfer before the window slammed shut on Deadline Day while Liverpool ended up signing Federico Chiesa from Juventus.

The Italian winger was in attendance at Old Trafford on Sunday as he watched his new teammates pick apart a hapless Manchester United side.

A report from the Athletic reveals the details of the transfer and explain why it didn’t materialise.

Liverpool were prepared to pay Newcastle United £75 million for Gordon, who scored 12 goals and assisted 11 in 48 appearances for the Toon last season.

Part of the agreement was for Joe Gomez to move to Newcastle for £45 million but after the transfer fell through, the English defender stayed at Liverpool although talk has already begun of a potential move away from Anfield in January although that’s all it is for now; talk.

The reason the mutually beneficial move fell through was because Newcastle United were able to resolve issues with PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) and were forced to scrap the transfers.

Potential to reignite this transfer in January?

While Gomez may still harbour hopes of leaving in January, it’s not likely.

Liverpool very rarely do business in January in terms of arrivals but almost never make any sales in the winter transfer window as it greatly increases the risk of injury derailing the season.

As for Gordon moving to Liverpool, it’s not likely for two reasons. The first is the same as Gomez leaving Liverpool. Newcastle will be loathe to lose him mid-season now that they managed to hold onto him.

Secondly, Liverpool signed Chiesa instead and now have the Italian, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez all able to play to a high level on the left wing.

Adding Gordon would rightly be seen as a gross misuse of funds.
