Report: Liverpool tried to sign world-class star but his €246k/week wages were the issue

Liverpool reportedly tried to sign Napoli’s world-class forward Victor Osimhen during the summer transfer window but ultimately moved on due to his huge wage demands.

The Nigerian striker scored 17 goals and provided four assists last season and would be an absolute menace to Premier League defenders but it’s unlikely that he ever moves to Anfield.

Liverpool have amazing attacking depth and did before they signed Federico Chiesa. Had they signed Osimhen, their options up front would be slightly ridiculous.

According to a report from Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool were prepared to gazump Chelsea for Osimhen’s signature this summer.

However, the player’s salary demands prompted them to end their interest. According to Capology, Osimhen earns €246,000 per week before performance-related bonuses.

Chelsea also removed themself from talks as Osimhen’s earnings exceed the salary cap. Additionally, it’s reported that a “halfway agreement was not found’.

If anything was proven at Old Trafford on Sunday when Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-0 it was that Arne Slot does not want for attacking options.

And that was with new signing Federico Chiesa in the stands after not being included in the squad for the trip to Manchester.

Liverpool are arguably the most difficult attacking side to face and now with Chiesa in the ranks, they have pretty much guaranteed that goals will flow this season.

Osimhen, while a truly world-class striker, would not greatly improve Liverpool’s ability to put the ball back in the net even though he is a better striker than both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

If Liverpool were going to do more business before the transfer window shut, it would have been wise to focus their attention on midfield and defensive recruits.
