Liverpool have had their fair share of transfer flops over the past decades.
The club is a huge institution and not every player who arrives plays his best. It looked like the case last year, when Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch struggled to find their feet. This season, they have all turned their fortunes around under Arne Slot.
Diaz and Gakpo are part of the best attacks in the league, and Ryan Gravenberch has made himself a candidate for player of the season. Liverpool are top of the Premier League with six points and a game in hand. The Reds all successfully made the knockout round of the Champions League midweek.

During the 2010s, the Reds were still trying to climb their way back up to elite status. After dominating Europe in the previous decades, the club found themselves in unfamiliar territory. The team cycled through multiple players and coaches trying to revive their glory days.
This lead to Liverpool signing Andy Carroll for £35million, making him one of the most expensive British players of that era. The striker had a very difficult time at Anfield as he was plagued by injuries. Even when he was fit, his performances failed to live up to the price tag.
Years later, the former Newcastle striker has shed light on his Liverpool experience:
“I was forced to go. I didn’t really want to go, I wanted to stay and play for my team,” Carroll said.
“I went from being a normal guy in Gateshead to a £35m record transfer who can’t walk out of his house. It was hard being myself, you need to change your life and your lifestyle. You couldn’t walk down the street anymore thinking you’re normal, because to everyone else you weren’t.
“I was injured at the time, it was tough to get started with the new lads who I hadn’t met, I didn’t know the staff, I didn’t know the area.”
“Brendan Rodgers came in then and he was messing me about, he clearly wanted me out.”
How was Andy Carroll’s time at Anfield?
The striker had 11 goals in 58 appearances and was just one of a long line of flops the club signed to play up top. Carroll will not be fondly remembered for his time at the club. However, the English man is making a name for himself with Bordeaux 13 years later.
Liverpool fans will be hoping Darwin Nunez does not go down the same route.
