Liverpool have had some problems in attack this season.
Despite all this, the reds have one of the best goalscoring records in the Premier League. This has been mostly due to Mohamed Salah. This season alone, the forward has been directly involved in over 40 league goals. Luis Diaz is the next highest scorer in the team with nine goals.
Arne Slot decided to use Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz as the striker in the team this season. Slot was not a fan of Darwin Nunez, who was limited to cup games and substitute appearances. The Uruguayan is widely expected to leave Anfield this summer according to reports.

Liverpool set to sign a striker this summer

This season has showed that the reds need an upgrade in attack. Liverpool have relied on Mohamed Salah for most of this year. Which is not a bad thing, but the supporting cast have showed that they cannot be relied upon. The reds lost against PSV in the Champions League and Plymouth in the FA Cup. Salah missed both these games and the team played like they had zero attacking threat up front.
According to James Pearce, Liverpool will be looking to fix this by signing a striker this summer. Speaking on GMS’s Market Madness podcast, he spoke about the future of Darwin Nunez too:
“I think it’s increasingly likely that Darwin Nunez will move on come the summer. You can see that he hasn’t kicked on this season in the way that everyone hoped.”
“I think part of that was also influenced by the difficulty in trying to replace him. You only have to look at Arsenal’s troubles with trying to bring in another attacker in January to see that it wasn’t a particularly great market to be able to operate in.
“Come the summer, I think a parting of the ways may well suit all parties, and I would expect Liverpool to be investing in a new number 9 before next season.”
Liverpool will reportedly be looking for a fee around £60million for Darwin Nunez in the upcoming window.
Who should the reds target this summer?
The biggest name in the news this season has been Alexander Isak. The Newcastle striker has reportedly made his desire to move this summer. And if the Magpies fail to make the Champions League, it would make him leaving St. James’ Park much easier. Isak will not come cheap, as he has been rumoured to cost over a £100million.
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo have also been linked with Liverpool since January. Brighton’s Joao Pedro is the latest name to have been tipped to move to Anfield.
