Liverpool are not strangers to signing big money flops.
Before the era of Jurgen Klopp, the club had a string of unsuccessful big money signings. Especially during the time where the team needed a striker desperately. Liverpool signed Ricky Lambert, Andy Carroll, Mario Balotelli and even Fabio Borini to fill the gap. These five players cost the reds well over €80million in transfer fees in the 2010s.
Under Klopp and Michael Edwards, the club shifted their approach. Liverpool focused on finding value in the market, buying underrated stars from smaller clubs. This method brought Firmino, Salah and Sadio Mane to Anfield. The trio gave Liverpool fans the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup among other trophies.
Quiz: Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
Journalist confirms big money signing will be moved on

In 2022, Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez for a reported £85million including add-ons. The Uruguayan striker was coming off an amazing season with Benfica in Portugal. Nunez had 26 goals in 28 league games that summer before he moved to England. His signing was so big, he was compared to another big signing in Erling Haaland that year. Haaland also joined Manchester City that summer.
However, the two players could not have had more different career paths. Haaland went on to score 36 league goals as City won the treble, while Nunez just managed nine goals in 29 Premier League appearances.
The 26-year old striker has found himself out of favour since Arne Slot arrived. The Liverpool boss has preferred to use Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in central roles in attack. James Pearce of The Athletic, has now confirmed that Darwin Nunez will be made available for sale this summer. This comes after the striker’s cameo against Aston Villa on Wednesday night. Nunez came on, missed a big chance, and squandered another opportunity on the counter when he tried to play the ball past an onrushing Emi Martinez. He could have squared the ball and given his teammate a chance to win the game.
Liverpool will be looking to recoup most of the £85million they spent to sign him.
Darwin Nunez’s time is up
It is time for Liverpool to move on from the striker. He has yet to justify his price tag so far. Every time he looked to have put together a good run, it was ruined by horrible decision making in the subsequent games. The reds rejected a bid for the Uruguayan in January, as they felt it would not have given them enough time to sort out a replacement. Liverpool can finally find a new number 9 ahead of next season.
Italian clubs are reportedly interested in signing the 26-year old this summer.
