The outstanding start to the season Liverpool have experienced is down to several of their players hitting their top form in the first couple of months of the campaign.
The Reds are sitting at the summit of the Premier League standings after the first seven league games and have emerged as a real contender to win the title.
Arne Slot has settled quickly as the Liverpool manager and has managed to bring the best out of several players at the start of the season.
Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate are two of the Liverpool players who have looked much better and are playing their best football under the new Reds boss.
Luis Diaz is also one of the players who have come to the fore at the start of the season and has scored five times in seven league games thus far.
The Colombian was looking a bit lost last season but has hit top form under Slot and Carragher admitted that the player has forced him to change his opinion.
Give him a new contract – Carragher urges Liverpool
The Reds signed the winger from the under Tottenham’s noses and the player was clearly delighted to move to Anfield over north London in 2022.
The former Liverpool defender admitted that he thought that the Reds needed to find someone to replace Diaz in the team during the summer.
However, he conceded that the winger has turned it around this season and in his current form, the player deserves a new contract from the Merseyside giants.
Carragher feels his poor form last season might have been because of an injury but indicated that Slot has managed to get more out of him this term.
“When I think about Liverpool I’m thinking, ‘Well where can we improve? Luis Diaz was a player who came in, did really well, he got a couple of knee injuries and we hadn’t quite seen the same player in the last 18 months,” Carragher told Liverpool.com.
“And you were thinking, ‘Okay, we need maybe a little bit of an upgrade there’.
“That would’ve been certainly what I was thinking over the summer.
“There was talk of the Anthony Gordon Link with Newcastle, Luis Diaz I think had a really good summer for Colombia and he’s been one of the best players in the Premier League I think at the start of the season.
“When you’ve got Luis Diaz in that form, you’re keeping him and you’re not looking to bring anyone else in. That’s just a fact.
“I just think those levels had dropped a little bit. And that may have been to do with the injury.
“It may be to do with a new manager just getting a little bit extra out of someone, that can happen. We’ve seen it with Gravenberch. But the Luis Diaz I’m seeing right now, I’d be desperate for him to sign a new contract.”
