Ibrahima Konate called up to France national squad

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate called up to France national squad to replace Raphael Varane after the Manchester United defender picked up an injury.

Konate, who enjoyed a fantastic debut season at Liverpool after transferring to Anfield for £42million, wasn’t called up to the squad initially.

This prompted outrage from Liverpool fans as the 22-year-old has been hugely impressive whenever he’s appeared this season

He tasted defeat as a Red for the first time in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Paris.

France have an immense wealth of talent but leaving Konate out was a ridiculous decision.

The latest, according to GFFN, is that Konate has now been called up to the France national squad to replace Varane, who suffered a thigh injury on Friday.

The Manchester United defender has been plagued by injuries this season. All in all, Varane missed a total of 17 games due to injury in his debut season at Manchester United after leaving Real Madrid for a fee worth £41milllion.

How many games could Ibrahima Konate play for France?

The senior France national squad lost 1-2 to Denmark on Friday, dropping points in the Nations League.

After receiving a call up, Konate will be eligible to play as many as three games with France scheduled to play:

  • Croatia on 6 June
  • Austria on 10 June
  • Croatia on 13 June

The French national team is hugely competitive and while Konate may not appear at all or feature only for a handful of minutes, he will still be able to learn a lot from some world class players.

Konate is yet to make his debut for the senior team and doing so this summer would be the perfect way to cap off what has been an incredible year for the Parisian.

How good has Ibrahima Konate been in 2022 for Liverpool?

Konate joined Liverpool for £36million in the same window that Varane sealed his move to Manchester United.

It’s safe to say that the 22-year-old Liverpool defender has had a more enjoyable debut season with United going through an unprecedented period of transition.

The Red Devils welcome Erik ten Haag to the club – their third manager in 7 months since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

Liverpool, however, have continued to seal their place back at the top of the European game along with the likes of Real Madrid.

Konate was crucial as Liverpool won two domestic cups, reached the Champions League final and came within touching distance of the Premier League trophy.

Despite dreams of a quadruple slipping away in the final few games of the season, Konate will consider his debut season in England as a resounding victory.
