Liverpool are expected to be active in the market in January to back new manager Arne Slot who has made a rousing start to life at Anfield despite an underwhelming summer transfer window.
The Merseyside giants went into the international break at the summit of the Premier League with 18 points from their opening seven league games.
Slot got over the disappointment of a lacklustre summer window soon and managed to get the best out of a few players who had question marks over their futures at the club going into the season.
However, there is no denying the fact that Liverpool dropped the ball last summer and failed to sign a defensive midfielder, which was a priority for the club.
Martin Zubimendi was their top target and Liverpool were prepared to pay his €60m release clause but the midfielder decided against leaving Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have been urged to go back for the Spain international in the winter transfer window as the club are keen to sign a midfielder in January.
However, they won’t have a clear run at Zubimendi in January as Manchester City are also in the race and are preparing ground to make an approach for him in the next window.
The Liverpool target provided a cryptic response to Manchester City rumours
Manchester City are also prepared to pay his €60m clause and are hoping to have better luck than Liverpool in convincing him to move to England.
However, the midfielder indicated that he is likely to stay put at Real Sociedad without explicitly saying so.
Zubimendi insisted that he will again follow his hear if he gets approached by another club but feels he still has a lot to do at Real Sociedad.
“My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times”, the midfielder said in a press conference.
“In every transfer window, teams come up. I think the best thing is to be at the club.
“Now I have a lot to give to Real Sociedad.”
