Hammarby’s sporting director has publicly addressed rumours linking Rangers with a move for Swedish right-back Hampus Skoglund this summer.
The Swedish club insists it is determined to hold onto the 22-year-old, who has attracted widespread attention after a series of strong performances in the Swedish league.
Danny Rohl’s Rangers side have been heavily linked with a swoop for the defender, with his valuation reported to be in the region of £2m.
Interest in Skoglund is not limited to Scotland, with clubs from Germany, Italy and France also said to have been monitoring the young full-back.
Despite the speculation, Hammarby sporting director Mikael Hjelmberg has made his position clear, stating that keeping the squad together is his primary objective.
Hjelmberg said: “Hampus is an important part of the team. We have a very good squad and my goal is to try to keep that squad as intact as possible.”
The sporting director also revealed that Rangers have not yet made any formal approach, casting some doubt on how advanced the Ibrox club’s interest actually is.
“I have no idea how serious Rangers’ interest in him is because I haven’t heard a sound from them,” Hjelmberg said, noting the transfer window has not yet officially opened.
He added: “The transfer window hasn’t opened, but of course, I have a fairly close dialogue with Hampus’ agent. But there haven’t been any concrete talks between us and any clubs yet.”
Hjelmberg also acknowledged that interest in Skoglund is not a new development, though nothing tangible has emerged during the current window so far.
“Previously, there had been concrete interest, but not this year,” he said, suggesting that earlier windows had brought more serious enquiries than the present one.
Rangers fans will be watching the situation closely as Rohl continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Skoglund’s age, position and form make him an attractive option for clubs across Europe, and the competition for his signature could intensify once the window officially opens.
For now, Hammarby hold all the cards, with their sporting director showing no signs of entertaining any offers for one of their most important players.
