Haiti showed Scotland exactly what to expect at the World Cup, threatening to overwhelm Peru before conceding twice late on in Miami.
The Caribbean nation will face Scotland in Boston next weekend, and they arrived at the match with serious momentum after demolishing New Zealand earlier in the week.
Peru, ranked 51st in the world and far closer to Scotland’s level than New Zealand, provided a much sterner test in front of a packed Nu Stadium.
Haiti’s all-out attacking approach proved hugely effective in the opening stages, with their front line causing Peru significant problems throughout the first half.
Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor opened the scoring on 16 minutes and came close to doubling the lead before the interval, giving Haiti genuine reason for optimism.
Their fans packed the stands with noise and colour, creating an atmosphere that could easily have been mistaken for a home fixture for the Caribbean side.
However, the second half told a very different story, with Peru exposing a glaring defensive weakness that will not have gone unnoticed in the Scotland camp.
Renzo Garces headed in an equaliser before winger Jairo Velez made it 2-1, with both goals coming from corner kicks in the closing stages.
Pundit Stan Collymore joked that Haiti had turned into “1970s Brazil” with their flicks and showboating in the early stages, underlining just how entertaining their attacking play can be.
Steve Clarke will nonetheless have taken plenty of encouragement from what he witnessed, with Haiti’s vulnerability from set pieces representing a clear avenue of attack for his side.
Sebastian Migne’s team remain a fun and unpredictable watch, but their defensive frailties suggest Scotland, who remain firm favourites, can find a way through.
Scotland face Bolivia tonight at 9pm UK time in their own final warmup clash before the tournament begins in earnest next weekend.
