Former Liverpool star rules out Premier League return

Liverpool are not set to welcome back this fan favourite anytime soon.

Players that leave clubs after a successful period often have mixed results when they return. This season, Liverpool’s rivals Manchester City brought back Ilkay Gundogan last summer. The midfielder has been poor this campaign and has struggled to rediscover his old form.

The Reds have had a quiet January transfer window. Just like in the summer, the club only made one permanent first team signing. Liverpool reportedly have big plans in the summer. With the contracts of three key players set to expire in the coming months, any transfers at Anfield will have to be meticulously planned.

Under Jurgen Klopp, the team had one of its most successful periods in this era. Liverpool won the Premier League, Champions League, EFL Cup and FA Cup under the German coach. The Reds became synonymous with Jurgen Klopp who turned the fortunes of the club around.

Players like Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Fabinho were key during Klopp’s era. Since 2023, all of these players have departed the club, with Klopp making his final bow at the end of last season.

Roberto Firmino joined Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League after eight years with the Reds. The Brazilian scored over 111 goals during his time in England. It was rumoured that he would be leaving Saudi Arabia in January. But the player has come out to confirm that he will remain with Al Hilal. However, Florian Plettenburg has reported that Firmino’s situation will be assessed in the summer.

Firmino was linked with a move to Fenerbahce and rumours started to grow after he posted this on his instagram:

“Fight the good fight of faith. Hold fast to the eternal life to which you were called and which you declared so well in the presence of many witnesses”

Reds could use a new striker

Speaking of strikers, it has been widely speculated that Darwin Nunez will be assessed this summer. The big money signing has failed to live up to his price tag, despite a handful of great goals and moments. Arne Slot has also chosen to use Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in the central role ahead of the Uruguayan.

Regardless of how this season ends, Liverpool will need to dip into the transfer market for a proven goalscorer.
