Former Director shares thoughts on Mohamed Salah contract situation

Mohamed Salah has having a fantastic season so far. The forward has 25 goals and 17 assists this campaign. He is on track to break the assists record in a single Premier League season, with 10 games to go. Salah is currently a front runner to win Player of the Year, and has been tipped to win the Ballon d’Or.
The Egyptian international is set to leave Anfield at the end of his contract this summer. So far, no updates concerning his contract talks have been given by the club. It is said that the forward would be open to stay, but only if Liverpool meet his demands. Trent Alexander-Arnold on the other hand, seems to have finalized a four-year deal with Real Madrid.
This is similar to 2022, when Salah penned a contract extension. Former Liverpool Director of Research Ian Graham admitted that he was against giving the 32-year old a new contract three years ago. Graham narrated how he and Liverpool made a u-turn and decided to offer Salah a new deal that season. He was speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football summit:
“I helped with the work for the last contract extension which sees him through to this summer.
“And at the time, I went into that thinking, with players of this age, I’m going to recommend not extending his contract. But the strength of data forces you to take an objective viewpoint and sometimes you can surprise yourself.
“When players [like Salah] drop off, it tends to be a drop in minutes rather than a drop in quality. It’s a question of physical fitness rather than their skills falling away.
“In summer 2022, I was surprised [the data showed] we should consider giving Salah a new contract. That was a hard piece of work and I am delighted I am not responsible for that piece of work today!”
Liverpool and Mohamed Salah are up against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next Wednesday.
