FC Barcelona join race for Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has been the subject of interest from multiple clubs in recent weeks.

The defender has been one of the standouts of the season. Liverpool are still in contention to win three trophies this season. The reds crashed out in the FA Cup on Sunday. Arne Slot made a whole host of changes to the Liverpool squad for Sunday’s game.

A second half goal from Ryan Hardie was enough for Plymouth to seal the win. Slot was disappointed with the result and the performances. Liverpool remain in the Premier League, Champions League and the League Cup. The fans have hope that the club can lift the treble at the end of the season.

Van Dijk has been in fantastic form this season. Liverpool’s club captain has showed that he is still at the top of his game. The Dutch international has anchored a solid defence for the reds this season. However, the club are yet to offer him a new long-term deal. Van Dijk could leave Anfield when his contract expires in the summer. He is not alone, as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah could follow him out the door.

The 33-year old shut down rumours surrounding his future at the club last week:

”The only thing I’m focusing on is the game ahead of me, and I’m feeling good. I think everyone can see that, and what the future brings, at the moment, I’ve got no idea.

So anyone who says they know it, they are absolutely wrong. But we’ll see what happens.”

Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have put forward offers for Van Dijk ahead of this summer. Now, Fichajes have reported that Barcelona have also joined the race. The La Liga side are eager to sign the defender, but will need to offload some players first.

Liverpool have a fight on their hands to keep their captain

This summer will be crucial to the future of Liverpool. The reds could lose three of their best players in the summer. However, the club have prepared potential replacements in case Salah, Trent and Van Dijk leave. There is a lot of time between now and the end of the season, Liverpool could still convince the defender to commit his long-term future. Fans would hope that Van Dijk lifts trophies before he brings his time at Anfield to an end.
