A lot of star names in Europe have at one point in their career, considered a move to Liverpool.

The Reds are a historic club, and their global appeal grew exponentially over the past decade. Jurgen Klopp brought immense success to the team before departing last year. His successor, Arne Slot, is on course to continue the great work the German coach did.

Slot has exceeded expectations in his first season with Liverpool. The Dutch coach has the Reds sitting top of the Premier League with nine points and a game in hand. Liverpool also finished with the best record in the Champions League group phase.

The Reds have made one permanent signing under Arne Slot since he took over in the summer. Federico Chiesa joined the Merseyside club on a cut price deal from Juventus. This January has been an even more quiet window.

No new faces have been added, but the club have had to shut down moves for their players. Darwin Nunez remains at Anfield, after the club rejected a massive bid from Saudi Arabia. Arne Slot is yet to make a permanent addition since the summer, with Liverpool ensuring fans that there will be activity  in the coming months. The priority for the reds is sorting the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk.

Tottenham defender Micky Van de Ven has revealed that he was close to joining Arne Slot before arriving in England. The 23-year old joined Spurs in 2023 for a reported €50million including add-ons. Van de Ven has now revealed how close he came to signing with Arne Slot:

“Arne Slot wanted to sign me for AZ when he saw me play in the first season at Volendam. The club refused to sell me and I had to accept that they would not let me go.”

“When he was at Feyenoord he tried to sign me, too, but by then I had already signed for Wolfsburg in Germany.”

“Do I think I would be playing for Liverpool now if I would have joined Slot at Feyenoord? That would have been some kind of fate.”

Would Van de Ven have been a nice addition to the Reds?

Seeing that the club signed Ibrahima Konate and how good the Frenchman has performed, one would wonder about Van de Ven. A player of his quality at Anfield would mean Virgil Van Dijk’s possible departure this summer would be less painful. As it stands, Liverpool fans are delighted with what they have in defence.
