Liverpool have missed out on a financial boost in the January transfer window.
The club has only made one permanent first team signing since Arne Slot took charge during the summer. Federico Chiesa joined on a cut-price deal from Juventus. The Dutch coach has still managed to do an impressive job this season, guiding the Reds to first place in the Premier League and Champions League group phase.
Liverpool are occupied with the contracts of three key first team players. Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be out of contract this summer if things remain the same. The club has made it clear that they are in talks to get the players to sign new deals to remain at Anfield.

This January transfer window has been a quiet one for Liverpool. Nothing seems to indicate that a new player will be signed. But some players have been linked with moves away from the club. Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, and Real Madrid have reportedly tried to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold this month. None of these deals are expected to go through.
Darwin Nunez was the subject of a bid from the Saudi Pro League, according to The Telegraph. But the Reds decided to reject a whopping 70million offer. The Premier League side felt that there were not many striking options available this month at the right price. Most players who leave during January are sold at premium prices, and the Reds felt like they would be paying too much for a replacement.
Diogo Jota’s recent injury problems were also another reason why a move for Nunez was blocked. The club felt they would not have any reliable striking options if Nunez was sold this month.
Keeping Darwin Nunez was the right decision
A lot of clubs are forced into all sorts of deals in January. Liverpool selling Nunez would mean they would have to spend more on signing a striker to replace him. For now, resolving the contract issues would be ideal instead of rushing into any transfer deals.
Liverpool are also in pole position to win all competitions, and changing the squad in the middle of the season is not the best choice.
