Arne Slot explains why Liverpool win over Brentford was “positive for many reasons”

Arne Slot won his second game in charge as Liverpool boss as he watched his side beat Brentford 2-0 to continue their excellent start to the new Premier League season.

As you would expect from a front three of Mo Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz- supplemented by the bombarding runs of Dominik Szoboszlai- the Reds were fantastic to watch.

On another day, Brentford would have conceded far more than they did with Liverpool hitting the wood work four times in the second half alone.

Speaking to the press after full-time, Slot shared his thoughts on the game and the current stage of his work with the squad with the Dutch coach particularly happy with the way his players progress the ball from defence.

Arne Slot feeling positive after second Liverpool win

While Manchester City are rightly known for being the best possession-based side in England if not Europe, Liverpool are hardly very far behind nor are Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

On Sunday, Liverpool ended the 90 minutes with a 91 pass accuracy from a total of 602 passes. That’s incredible and even more impressive when you consider the Reds are far riskier with their pass selection compared to Man City, in particular.

The champions are hardly safe with their passing but Pep Guardiola’s side values ball retention and incision over trying to create every possible goalscoring chance he can.

Slot is more than satisfied with the current state of play as he told reporters on Sunday.

When asked for his assessment of the performance against the Bees, Slot said: “Positive for many reasons. I think Brentford showed last week with their first goal, but in general also in their first game, that they can play out from the back really good.

“They tried to do this here as well, sometimes it worked better than other moments but they are also really threatening on the counter-attack and they are obviously a big threat on set-pieces, and I think the only threat they had today was the set-piece where Alisson [Becker] saved us in the second half.

“It was also pleasing to see that from their set-piece we could score our first goal.”
