Arne Slot doesn’t have much to complain about this year’s summer transfer window. However, there might only be one player he regrets not signing this window.
Alexander Isak was expected to be all over the news on deadline day with his record-breaking transfer. The Swedish international left Newcastle United to sign for Liverpool in a deal worth £125m.
The Swede was, in fact, all over the news, but probably not as much as Marc Guéhi. The English centre back was fully ready to take over the reins at Anfield as he was doing his medicals for the Reds in London.
Unfortunately, the deal fell through after the submission of the final offer as Crystal Palace decided to hold onto their captain for a little longer.
This was, in fact, a big hit to Arne Slot’s plans for the season. With only three senior defenders in the first team squad, it is going to take a lot of careful planning to get through the season without a depth crisis.
The Reds will definitely have the option to sign the defender back in January. The Eagles definitely won’t be keen on letting their captain leave on a free.

Thomas Tuchel comments on the Marc Guéhi transfer saga

Slot will probably manage somehow, but the one person who won’t be worried much is England manager Thomas Tuchel. The German manager will still have Guéhi in full form for the international break.
When asked about the situation with Marc, this is what Tuchel had to say:
“We had a chat with him. He looks absolutely fine. Very impressive on the field. He’s the main driver of Palace’s success, captain and the leader. He’s continued this in camp. He handles it with respect and grace and a brilliant attitude.”
The English defender was one of the few players this summer who were respectful throughout the big sagas. Unlike players like Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, Guéhi accepted the club’s decision as he only has one year left on his contract anyway.
The Eagles coach, Oliver Glasner, was open to selling the defender only if they had found a replacement, which he made very clear to the management.
But the management’s decision to let Marc do medicals with Liverpool on deadline day, with no replacement in sight, led to a feud with the chairman.
Glasner was open to walking away immediately if the club had sold their captain. This will lead to interesting dynamics down the line in the January transfer window, but till then, Slot will have to manage somehow.
