Virgil Van Dijk keen to move on

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk was frustrated after the team dropped points to Everton on Wednesday night.

The toffees ended the game with a crucial point in their final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Everton took the lead early as Beto pounced on a quick free kick after 11 minutes. Alexis Mac Allister equalized just five minutes later. Both teams went into half time at 1-1.

A late goal from Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead after 73 minutes. The Egyptian forward now has 22 goals and leads the Golden Boot race. An injury time equalizer from James Tarkowski meant both teams shared the spoils. There was a lot of controversy after the game, as both teams had a man sent off after full time. Van Dijk stepped in an tried to calm tensions at the end of the game.

Arne Slot was also sent off after a confrontation with referee Michael Oliver. The Liverpool boss is now at risk of facing a touchline ban.

The Liverpool captain is one of three players who are out of contract in the summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are the other two. All three have been linked with a move away since January. Liverpool had to reject bids from Saudi Arabia for Salah. The Egyptian international was offered lucrative deals to join the Saudi Pro League. Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly in talks with Real Madrid. However, the latest reports indicate that the defender will make a decision at the end of the season.

Virgil Van Dijk mentioned last week that he is yet to sign a new deal with Liverpool. There were rumours that he had signed a contract extension. After the draw against Everton, the club captain says his focus is solely on the next run of games:

“I think conceding a goal in the last seconds of a game, or even after added time of a game, is very difficult,” he said.

“That hurt and should hurt for each one of us but it is the reality.

“You have two things you can do: you can dwell on it and stay angry about it or you can take it on board, start the recovery and be ready for Wolves because that will be a difficult test again and I think that’s the best thing to do.

“I think it is better to just get over it as soon as possible.”
