Liverpool could lose their club captain this summer.
Virgil Van Dijk is set to leave when his contract ends this summer. He is not alone, as Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold could follow him out of the door. Liverpool could lose the crucial spine of the team in the space of one transfer window.
Many fans and pundits alike have criticized the reds’ owners for allowing this to happen. The club has been engaged in contract talks for a while now with no signs of a breakthrough. Ahead of this summer, multiple reports indicate that Liverpool will splash the cash in the transfer market. This has caused worry among some fans, who think the departures of Trent, Salah and Van Dijk will ease the current wage bill to allow for new signings.

Van Dijk slams Michael Owen after Liverpool derby
On Wednesday night, Liverpool recorded a hard fought win over Everton. Before the game, Arsenal had cut the lead to nine points with the sneaky hope of continuing their title charge. Liverpool did the job smoothly in front of a record crowd at Anfield. The game was full of intensity and even had some controversy just like in the last Merseyside derby. A goal from Diogo Jota in the second half was enough to seal all three points for Arne Slot’s side.
Virgil Van Dijk captained his side to a crucial win. Despite being given a hard time by Everton striker Beto, he and his defence held on to keep a clean sheet. After the game, the Liverpool captain directly addressed Michael Owen’s recent comments on the reds’ title charge:
“Well, I think we have to change that narrative a little bit.
“We’re fighting for the biggest prize of the season, we worked so hard for it, 20 teams are working so hard to be on top of the Premier League.
‘We have eight games to go, we know what’s at stake, we have to go for it, we have to fight, we have to enjoy the whole ride and then let’s see. Like I said, it’s still looking very special in my eyes.
“I think what you said, at the start of the season, I think no one expected us to even try to fight on all four fronts, obviously we’re at the stage now where we’re still fighting for the biggest, and that’s the reality. It’s still a possibility that this season will be very, very special.”
Virgil Van Dijk has given fans some hope near the end of the season.
