Former Ajax and Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has made a bold claim regarding Liverpool’s new midfield acquisition, Ryan Gravenberch.
According to van der Vaart, Liverpool may not need Jude Bellingham, as Gravenberch has the potential to exceed the English midfielder’s impact on the game.
Liverpool’s decision to move on from pursuing Jude Bellingham was a major talking point during the summer of 2023.
Bellingham, one of Europe’s most highly-rated young talents, eventually joined Real Madrid in a high-profile transfer worth €103 million.
Meanwhile, Liverpool turned their attention to signing Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo. They then signed Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich for a more modest fee of €40 million.
Although the two midfielders play different roles, van der Vaart believes that Gravenberch could become an even more influential player for Liverpool than Bellingham.
Gravenberch’s potential under Arne Slot
In his first season in England, Gravenberch had a relatively quiet start, taking his time adjusting to life in the Premier League.
However, under the guidance of new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, van der Vaart sees Gravenberch taking his game to the next level in the 2024/25 season.
Van der Vaart emphasized his belief in Gravenberch’s talent, saying at the BetMGM:”I’ve always said the sky’s the limit for him if he can use his full potential and ability. I’m not surprised by how good he’s been this season, both for Liverpool and the Netherlands.”
He pointed out that Slot has found the perfect role for Gravenberch in Liverpool’s midfield, allowing the player to thrive and showcase his strengths.
Why Gravenberch could surpass Bellingham
Gravenberch has already impressed both at the club and international levels, with van der Vaart highlighting his recent performances.
One standout moment was a brilliant pass he played during a match against Germany, which van der Vaart cited as evidence of Gravenberch’s intelligence, strength, and speed on the field.

According to the Dutch football legend, Gravenberch has all the attributes to become a top-tier midfielder and make a lasting impact at Liverpool.
Excitement for Liverpool fans
As Gravenberch continues to develop, van der Vaart believes Liverpool fans should be excited about what lies ahead for the Dutch international.
With his potential fully unlocked under Slot’s management, the midfielder could be a driving force in Liverpool’s success for years to come.
While the decision to pass on Bellingham was met with initial skepticism, van der Vaart’s faith in Gravenberch suggests that Liverpool may have made the right call after all.
