Despite missing out on Marc Guéhi in the summer, Liverpool seem to be willing to risk it all in January in hopes of signing the Englishman for free in summer 2026.
This has already rung many bells among the wider football community. Guéhi was denied a transfer to Anfield in the closing hours of deadline day, following internal strife at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish had given a green light for their skipper to do medicals for Liverpool in London. As the club failed to sign a replacement of their own Austrian manager, Oliver Glasner doubled down on the club for their decision.
Glasner was willing to walk away as Parish had dismissed his earlier suggestions of only selling Marc following a substitute signing.
Liverpool will be feeling the absence in the back four as the season goes on. However, Arne Slot looks prepared to hold out till summer 2026 for a free transfer.
Despite Liverpool allegedly having agreements with the player for a 2026 transfer, the strategy seems too risky following the situation at Selhurst Park.
The Eagles didn’t live up to Glasner’s transfer market expectations, and the Austrian will have his contract expire at the end of the current season.
To convince the club for a respectable transfer window, they will be eager to sell Marc Guéhi in January for funds collection.

Real Madrid and Juventus to jump into the Marc Guéhi saga

According to Football Insider, Liverpool will risk losing the Crystal Palace captain to Real Madrid or Juventus in the January transfer window.
“We know how good the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus are at landing free agents. They do specialise in that, to try and sign players on free transfers, usually with the offer of a huge signing-on fee as well.”
“Obviously, it’s hard to compete with the likes of Real Madrid when it comes to signing [under-contract] players as well. Liverpool have now done so much work on Guehi that they’ll be hopeful that, although they did miss out last-minute in this window, they can finally get a deal done.”
“[That will] either be in January if the situation arises, or on a free transfer next summer”, Transfer Correspondent Peter O’Rourke told the Inside Track Podcast.
A summer 2026 wait-out seems pretty out of place now, considering both the defensive situation at Anfield and incoming interests for the player.
