Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a serious injury in the Champions League last week.
The reds suffered a shock exit to Paris Saint-Germain. After picking up a shock 1-0 away win in Paris, it was expected that Liverpool would win the second leg at Anfield to qualify. PSG came to Anfield, and scored an early goal to force the game to extra time and eventually a penalty shootout. Liverpool suffered a heart-breaking loss in the shootout.
Just a few days later, the reds faced Newcastle in the League Cup final. Trent Alexander-Arnold missed the game through injury. Liverpool suffered another shock defeat, as the Magpies took a 2-0 lead at Wembley. Newcastle eventually won the game, but there were concerns when Federico Chiesa pulled one goal back late in the match.

Trent Alexander-Arnold injury status revealed

Both games that week revealed a series of reality checks for Liverpool. First of all, the squad depth was hugely exposed in both games. Arne Slot had no say in transfers this season, and the only permanent first team signing he had was Federico Chiesa. When Liverpool faced PSG, they looked to the bench and could only call upon the likes or Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliot and Wataru Endo. The French side brought on Desire Doue and Goncalo Ramos to replace the likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
The lack of options in the squad was even more obvious in the League Cup final. Arne Slot had to start almost the same starting lineup against Newcastle. With Trent Alexander-Arnold out, Liverpool had to rely on Jarell Quansah who had never played at right-back. Liverpool also lost the game
Now, Slot’s side are sweating over the status of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Athletic are reporting that the defender will return to training “at some point in April”. With the season ending in May, some people are doubting that Trent will return in time. And with the 26-year old reportedly leaving on a free transfer, the player could choose not to risk playing and aggravating the injury.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is not the only player who could leave Anfield this summer. Liverpool have set a £55million asking price for Diogo Jota.
Anfield may have seen the last of Trent
Liverpool fans must anticipate the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold has played his last game for the club. Him returning in April does not really benefit anyone, with the reds having a 12-point gap at the top of the table. The player and the club must make the best decision for everyone involved.
