Trent Alexander-Arnold is being cautious when it comes to discussing his future at Liverpool, but one thing is clear: his decision will heavily hinge on the club’s ability to win trophies.
The 25-year-old, now in the final year of his contract, could leave Anfield for free at the end of the season, which would be a significant blow for the Reds.
Having come through Liverpool’s academy, Alexander-Arnold has become a fan favourite and a key player for the club.
His potential departure would be a major loss, both on and off the pitch, and Real Madrid are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing him.
While Alexander-Arnold hasn’t ruled out the possibility of leaving, he remains focused on the current season.
“I want to be a Liverpool player this season [as a minimum] is what I will say,” Alexander-Arnold stated. “I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public, and this one won’t be either.”
TAA is motivated by silverware and legacy above all
For Alexander-Arnold, trophies are the primary motivator when it comes to his career decisions. The right-back made it clear that his desire to win silverware will be the biggest factor in determining his next move.
“The most important thing is always trophies if I am honest,” he said. “I want to win trophies. I am a player who is highly motivated by trophies and winning things and being elite. So that is probably the main factor of anything, if you have a personality that is elite, who wants to win and will do anything to win, then that is what drives me.”
Over the course of his career at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold has already lifted numerous trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup. Reflecting on his time with Liverpool, he suggested that his hunger for more success could still be satisfied at Anfield.
“We were close to the title last season and we got a cup,” he explained. “The quadruple was on for a while I suppose. This season we are looking really good, it is still early days, but we need a lot of consistency. It will be difficult, but we are looking to win as many trophies as we can.”
Trent offers insight into new relationship with Arne Slot
Alexander-Arnold also spoke highly of new manager Arne Slot, revealing that the Dutchman has already helped him improve his game. The right-back outlined the conversations they’ve had regarding his goals and how Slot is pushing him to become an even better player.
“We kind of talked about targets and aims, and I said to him that I would like to be the defender that no one wants to come up against in Europe,” Alexander-Arnold said.
Slot has taken a hands-on approach, regularly reviewing games with Alexander-Arnold and highlighting areas for improvement. The defender appreciates the feedback and is embracing the challenge.
“He [Slot] highlights where he wants me to improve. Even in the Milan game (which Liverpool won 3-1 on Tuesday) we had about 20 clips going through what I could have done better and the good parts as well. It is really refreshing to have a manager who will help and guide me. I am someone who wants to learn, someone who strives to be the best ever.”
As the season progresses, Liverpool fans will be eager to see if the club’s success on the pitch can convince Alexander-Arnold to commit his future to Anfield.
