Trent Alexander-Arnold hands major blow to Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has dominated headlines this season and for Liverpool, it is not always for the right reasons. The club are still struggling to negotiate a new deal with the defender who has a chance to join Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.

Alexander-Arnold has yet to agree to sign a new contract and negotiations over a new deal have dragged on for months with the spectre of Real Madrid looming large on the horizon.

The Spanish giants are growing increasingly confident of taking him to Madrid next summer on a free transfer and are convinced that he won’t sign a new deal at Anfield.

Liverpool are insistent that the player has not made up his mind either way and negotiations are still ongoing between the club and his representatives.

The Merseyside giants have offered him a mega-contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League but the defender is still to agree to sign on the dotted lines.

However, Liverpool have a more immediate concern around him given he is still an important player in the team.

Liverpool suffer more Trent Alexander-Arnold pain

Alexander-Arnold suffered a hamstring injury in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa just ahead of the international break.

The injury was not as serious as previously feared and the defender was expected to return to action after the break.

However, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has confirmed that the right-back is still not back in training and won’t be available to face Southampton this weekend.

The Reds manager also conceded that he is not sure whether Alexander-Arnold will be fit enough to face Real Madrid in a big Champions League game at Anfield next week.

“Trent is not training yet but he is getting there”, Slot said in a press conference.

“We expect him back soon.”

On him being potentially fit for the Real Madrid game, he said: “That is something that we have to wait and see because I just said that the last few days of recovery are always the most tricky because they have to go from isolated training sessions to group training sessions so it’s difficult to judge.”

Regardless of the contract talks, Liverpool would be desperate to have Alexander-Arnold back in action soon given the way he has been playing this season.
