Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara is reportedly on his way out of Anfield as his contract draws to an end this season.

Neil Jones, writing for Caught Offside, suggests that the Spaniard's departure is almost a foregone conclusion given the situation at the club.

Jones writes: “I would be very sceptical about links between Liverpool and players such as Joshua Kimmich and Nicolo Barella. Good players, no question. Great players actually.

“But Liverpool are not short on midfielders, and with the exception of Endo and Thiago Alcantara, who is almost certainly leaving in the summer, they are all younger than those two.

“The potential of Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch is obvious, and with the likes of Stefan Bajcetic and Bobby Clark also emerging, it is hard to see the need for a 29- year-old Kimmich or a 27-year-old Barella.

“I personally feel Liverpool’s squad planning this summer will be about fine tuning, rather than overhauling.

“They were happy with the midfield business they did last summer, so expect attention to switch to other areas – central defence, full-back and the forward line – now.”

A disappointing end to Thiago Alcantara's career at Anfield

Alcantara, who made the switch from Bayern Munich to Liverpool in 2020, has had a tenure marred by injuries, falling short of the high expectations set upon his arrival.

Despite the undeniable skill and experience Alcantara brought to Liverpool, his impact has been limited due to a series of unfortunate injuries.

These setbacks have significantly restricted his availability for selection, making it difficult for him to contribute consistently to the team's efforts.

Liverpool, in anticipation of refreshing their squad, made notable moves in the recent summer transfer window to bolster their midfield options. The arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo not only brought new energy to the midfield but also heightened competition for places within the team.

This influx of talent has played a crucial role in Liverpool's commendable performance this season, leading the Premier League table and securing the Carabao Cup by defeating Chelsea in the final.

Additionally, their progression in both the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League highlight the depth and quality of the squad.
