Neil Jones on who makes the most sense to sign: Crysencio Summerville or Johan Bakayoko?

Neil Jones believes that it “makes more sense” for Liverpool to sign Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville than Johan Bakayoko after claims the groundwork is being laid to sign the PSV Eindhoven attacker.

Liverpool's biggest transfer priorities this month and in the summer are to add a centre back (preferably one that can also play at left-back) and a specialist defensive midfielder.

Yet, there are a lot of reports, including ones from trusted sources, that suggest Jurgen Klopp is also seriously considering what his next attacking signing will be.

Only Manchester City (45) have scored more goals than Liverpool (43) in the Premier League although, despite their defensive injuries, the league leaders are comfortably the best side defensively this term.

However, with the Reds linked with two young attackers, let's take a look at who could be the next starlet to join Klopp's exciting new side.

Liverpool laying the groundwork for £34M Johan Bakayoko transfer

A recent report from Football Insider suggests that Liverpool are one of "up to five" Premier League clubs that are closely tracking 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger, Johan Bakayoko.

With four goals and 13 assists, the Belgian winger is a thrilling young prospect.

The Reds are said to have "concrete interest" in Bakayoko and are beginning to lay the groundwork for a potential summer move to Anfield.

Yet, he's not the only young wide player linked with Liverpool.

It “makes more sense” to sign Crysencio Summerville, Neil Jones says

Trusted source for Liverpool news and transfers journalist Neil Jones suggests that while Bakayoko is a player they're looking at, signing 22-year-old Leeds United attacker Crysencio Summerville is a more logical next move.

He told Empire of the Kop Insider, Jones said: “I think Crysencio Summerville makes more sense, at the moment, than Johan Bakayoko in the sense that Liverpool wouldn’t sign a player who has great expectations of going straight into the side.

“Unless they sign Kylian Mbappe, they’re not signing someone who goes right into the Liverpool team and starts every game!

“It would be harder to imagine Bakayoko accepting that role given the club he’s been playing for and the level he’s been playing at. Summerville, coming from the Championship, would have a decent idea that he’s going to have to be patient.”

This season, Summerville has 12 goals and five assists and is the prolific goalscorer of the two although he does have the advantage of being two years older.

He actually scored a brilliantly well-taken goal against Liverpool last season, receiving the ball under pressure from Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Thiago Alcantara before dispatching an excellent finish beyond Alisson Becker to seal a late 2-1 win for Leeds in the Premier League.

You can watch that goal in minute 0:49 of the video embedded below.

Bakayoko is a very creative player but it seems there are concerns over his ability to translate his talent to the Premier League as well as an expectation to be an immediate starter.

If Mohamed Salah is still at the club, there's virtually no chance of Bakayoko starting regularly in the Premier League but he's certainly a player to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

Because Liverpool are.
