It will be interesting to see if Liverpool bid for €70M midfielder after latest report

In late February, Portuguese outlet O Jogo claimed that Liverpool and Manchester City were keeping a close eye on Porto midfielder Alan Varela.

Now, the same outlet is suggesting that Liverpool scouted the Argentine has been scouted by the Reds as they continue to weigh up how best to make him theirs.

As per the latest report from O Jogo, from Wednesday, Liverpool scouts watched Varela in action during last weekend's match against Vitoria SC, a game also attended by scouts from Chelsea.

As the season draws to a close, it will be intriguing to see whether Liverpool submits a formal offer for Varela, who is considered one of Europe’s most promising talents.

The young midfielder's acquisition could significantly bolster Liverpool's midfield strength.

With the financial capability to meet his €70 million release clause, Liverpool might consider investing in Varela to enhance their defensive midfield capabilities.

His presence in the team would likely provide greater defensive stability and allow Liverpool’s creative forces more freedom to impact the game offensively.

However, Porto are expected to be reluctant to part with such a vital player, likely forcing Liverpool into triggering his release clause to secure his transfer.

Chelsea are also reportedly looking to add depth to their midfield, with Varela seen as a potential partner for Enzo Fernandez. The report says nothing about how this might impact would-be Liverpool signing Moises Caicedo after his £115 million move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Varela himself might find a move to Liverpool appealing, especially with the prospect of playing alongside fellow Argentine Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield.

Liverpool’s track record of developing young talent into top-tier professionals could be a decisive factor in his decision.

Certainly one to keep your eyes on should anything develop in the next two months.
