Three players who could replace Gini Wijnaldum this summer

Georginio Wijnaldum - Liverpool.

With just 13 months left on his current deal, Liverpool need to make a decision on the future of one of their key players, Gini Wijnaldum.

Signed from Newcastle in 2016, the Dutch international has been a key player in some of Liverpool’s biggest game since his arrival, including a brace against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final on their way to a famous 4-3 aggregate win and a crucial goal against Roma in the previous year’s semi-final.

These three goals alone put Wijnaldum into Liverpool folklore, but with just over a year left on his deal, Liverpool will need to start looking elsewhere if they can’t find a replacement. Here’s three players who could replace Gini Wijnaldum if he decided to leave.

Sergej Milinković-Savić

Milinković-Savić has been a vital piece of Lazio’s jigsaw alongside former Liverpool cult hero, Lucas Leiva in recent years.

Signed from Genk in 2015 for an undisclosed fee, the Serbian has gone on to be one of the best players in Serie A since his arrival, winning the Best Midfielder of the Year award last season.

The 25-year-old has no release clause in his current contract that runs until 2023, so if Liverpool want him they will have to spend big to prize Lazio’s key man away.

Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey would be a like for like replacement for the physicality of Gini Wijnaldum.

The Atletico Madrid powerhouse looked very impressive across both legs against Liverpool in the Champions League, dominating Jurgen Klopp’s midfield alongside Saul Niguez.

The Ghanian international reportedly has a release fee of £43million, so he would be a very well priced option in such an inflated market.

If Liverpool want to pursue the deal they will need to act fast with Arsenal and Manchester United considering bids for the player, however, with Liverpool’s pulling power due to Jurgen Klopp’s charisma, they’re surely the favourites for Thomas Partey’s signature.

Marko Grujić

Another Serbian international, Grujić is already on Liverpool’s books having signed for the club all the way back in December 2015.

Jurgen Klopp’s first signing, Grujić, has spent the last two seasons out on loan at German outfit Hertha Berlin.

An array of impressive displays have led to him becoming a key player for Hertha Berlin despite only being six points clear of the relegation play-off before the suspension of the season.

This summer is the pivotal one for Grujić, as he must decide whether or not to stay at Liverpool and fulfil his potential or leave for pastures new.
