The truth about claims Liverpool could sign £51m ace in January

Liverpool could reportedly return to sign Martin Zubimendi after failing to sign him in the summer transfer window.

The Real Sociedad midfielder rejected the chance to move to Liverpool but reports are already suggesting he could now make the switch from Spain to England in the January window.

Liverpool triggered the midfielder’s £51 million (€60m) release clause but the player did not want the move to Anfield.

Latest on Liverpool plans to sign Zubimendi

A report from Football Espana surfaced on Sunday, claiming that Liverpool could make a move to sign Zubimendi in the winter window.

That seemed to be a tenuous link at best but now Fabrizio Romano has added his voice to the rumours.

Speaking on The Debrief, Romano admitted that he has “no idea” if Liverpool are planning a second move for the 25-year-old, he did say the Reds have identified him as the “perfect” player for the position.

This doesn’t, however, serve as a concrete basis for rumours suggesting Liverpool are already making plans to lure him to Anfield.

Everything until this point suggests Liverpool are not in Zubimendi’s plans and until a trusted source says otherwise, disregard anything that seems like transfer fodder.

Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil recently explained the Zubimendi fiasco

Liverpool thought they had secured Zubimendi before they rejected them and his coach shared the details last month.

“He has rejected an offer. There is no doubt that Liverpool are great and the fact that he has said no, putting in what they put in, is a reason to be proud,” Alguacil said.

“It means that things are being done well at the club and even if such powerful clubs come, Martin says no, I’m happy, but there’s still time until the 30th. Now it was Liverpool, but tomorrow it could be another great team, because the players have a level.

“Although, for me, the biggest is Real Sociedad. I imagine he must have thought that and that is why he decided to stay.

“[Teams coming for our players] happens every year and to every team. Every summer there’s movement. There are no two players like [Mikel] Merino and [Robin] Le Normand, and don’t even get me started on if Zubimendi leaves in the last minute of the window…

“They are all unreal players because of the things they have done with us. Le Normand has left, Arsenal want Merino and Liverpool were willing to pay Zubimendi’s clause. But we can’t find excuses.”
