Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson has moved proactively to secure goalkeeping cover amid growing transfer interest surrounding first-choice keeper Dimitar Mitov.
The club confirmed the signing of experienced German goalkeeper Marius Muller from Wolfsburg earlier this week, adding depth to the position at Pittodrie.
Robinson acknowledged directly that speculation surrounding Mitov played a role in accelerating the club’s decision to bring Muller through the door.
He said: “Marius is a very experienced goalkeeper, played at a very high level in the Bundesliga, so he adds real experience, real quality to the goalkeeping group and it was something that we’ve been monitoring.”
Robinson was candid about his reasons for acting quickly, pointing to the dangers of waiting too long in the transfer window before finding a replacement.
“I’m someone who believes in being proactive instead of reactive, where you end up paying too much money at the last days of the window, so we’ve moved very quickly to put that in place,” Robinson explained.
The Aberdeen boss stressed that monitoring potential squad departures is a standard part of managing a competitive group of players at this level.
“As a manager, you’re always on the lookout for what can strengthen your squad,” Robinson said, adding that clubs must always prepare for bigger sides targeting their best players.
Robinson confirmed the opportunity to sign Muller was too good to pass up, given the level of experience the goalkeeper brings from German football.
“The opportunity came for Marius and it’s not often you get the opportunity with that amount of experience and that level of quality,” he said.
Despite the arrival of Muller, Robinson insisted there is currently nothing concrete regarding any departure for Mitov from the club.
He confirmed: “At the moment, there’s been obviously lots of rumours, lots of talk, lots of agents, but no, not at this moment in time.”
Robinson also addressed the challenge of managing a large squad, noting that retaining every player is rarely practical given the numbers involved.
“I like to keep everybody, but that’s obviously not feasible when you’ve got a squad of 29 players, 30 players,” he added.
On the injury front, midfielder Kjartan Kjartsson, Kenan Bilalovic, and Alex Briedel have all returned to training, though the weekend fixture against Queen’s Park arrives too soon for Stuart Armstrong.
