Special Clause gives Manchester United edge in race to land 21-year-old Liverpool target

Liverpool have made an outstanding start to their season under new manager Arne Slot and are hoping to build on it following the international break.

The Merseyside giants are top of the Premier League table after seven league games and are being looked at as a real contender to win the league this season.

Slot has made an instant impact on the team and has managed to get the best out of the Liverpool squad in the first couple of months of the season.

Liverpool are also looking to make sure they avoid the mistakes of the last transfer window and are identifying targets for several areas of their squad.

The Reds are aware that sooner or later they will have to bring in a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson and are already looking at left-backs across the world.

Alvaro Carreras has emerged as a potential target following his impressive performances at Benfica this season.

Liverpool face Manchester United roadblock in pursuit of Carreras

Carreras left Manchester United in the summer to move to Benfica after failing to break into the first-team at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are struggling in the left-back area this season and it has led to criticism of their decision to sell the Spaniard given his performances at Benfica.

Liverpool are keeping tabs on him but according to Portuguese daily Record, Manchester United have a distinct advantage in a race to sign the left-back.

As part of the agreement with Benfica, Manchester United have an option to buy Carreras back for €20m from the Portuguese giants.

Manchester United have a first option to take him back to Old Trafford if Carreras is to leave Benfica in the near future.

They are likely to try and block the former Real Madrid academy starlet from moving Anfield if Liverpool make a concrete move to sign him.
