A few years ago, Eljif Elmas was a name frequently mentioned in transfer rumours, especially linked with Premier League clubs. The North Macedonian midfielder, then with Napoli, attracted significant interest, with Liverpool reportedly among his suitors.
In December 2022, Jurgen Klopp was said to have personally contacted Elmas, signalling Liverpool’s intent to sign him. According to recent claims from Italy, Liverpool were prepared to offer up to €30 million for the midfielder. However, their pursuit was blocked by Napoli’s then-manager, Luciano Spalletti.
AreaNapoli reports that Spalletti regarded Elmas as “the light of my eyes,” which led to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis refusing to sanction the transfer. Despite Liverpool’s willingness to meet the €30 million asking price, Spalletti’s strong admiration for Elmas meant the deal did not proceed.
The situation took a turn after De Laurentiis and Spalletti’s relationship soured, leading to Spalletti’s departure from Napoli. Subsequently, Elmas expressed his desire to leave the club during the winter 2024 transfer window. He was eventually transferred to RB Leipzig for €23 million.
However, Elmas has struggled to make an impact at Leipzig. The 24-year-old has yet to feature in a match this season and has faced difficulties in establishing himself since the move. The promising career trajectory he once had appears to have stalled following Spalletti’s exit from Napoli.
Liverpool’s interest in Elmas highlights their previous commitment to strengthening their squad, and the €30 million offer underscores their serious intent. As Elmas’s career faces uncertain times, it remains to be seen whether he can recapture the form that once made him a highly sought-after player.
