This season, Crystal Palace have made notable moves in the transfer market, including securing Michael Olise’s departure to Bayern Munich and bringing in Matt Turner on loan from Nottingham Forest.
However, it turns out that Liverpool had an opportunity to sign Turner before he joined Palace.
Liverpool’s decision to pass on Turner came despite Nottingham Forest’s attempt to include the American goalkeeper in a deal. Turner, who joined Forest from Arsenal for £10 million in August 2023, was offered to Liverpool as part of a package to acquire Caoimhin Kelleher, alongside an additional £7 million.
According to James Pearce of The Athletic, Liverpool showed “zero interest” in the 30-year-old goalkeeper. Instead, Turner ended up at Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day, filling the void left by Sam Johnstone’s £10 million move to Wolves. Turner’s role at Palace has been primarily as an emergency backup to Dean Henderson.
Liverpool’s rejection of Turner highlights their strategic choices in the transfer market. While Palace moved swiftly to bolster their squad with Turner, Liverpool opted not to pursue the experienced goalkeeper, sticking with their existing options.
Turner’s move to Palace underscores the shifting dynamics of player transfers and the varied priorities of different clubs. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how these decisions impact Liverpool and Crystal Palace, particularly in terms of goalkeeping stability and squad depth.
