The Virgil Van Dijk saga continues at Liverpool.
The reds are yet to conclude negotiations with the Dutch defender. Van Dijk is among three players set to leave at the end of their contract this summer. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold could both follow him out of the door. Liverpool’s transfer plans ahead of next season will factor in the trio’s futures.
Arne Slot’s dreams of winning the Champions League were shattered midweek. Liverpool lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield. Slot’s side were outplayed over both legs, with the attacking quality of the French side proving too much to handle.
Van Dijk could still leave the club with silverware; Liverpool can win the League Cup when they face Newcastle in the final this weekend. The reds are also top of the Premier League with 10 games to go.

The future of Liverpool’s captain is still in the air as the season approaches its end. Similar to Mohamed Salah, Van Dijk has hinted that he could stay at Anfield if the club agree to his terms. However, nothing has been confirmed so far. Some weeks ago, the defender rubbished reports of a new contract extension. Liverpool have reportedly lined up replacements this summer, including this England star.
In the past few days, Fabrizio Romano has provided a very positive update on the future of Virgil Van Dijk:
“Liverpool internally insist on their plan to keep Virgil van Dijk at the club. They really want to keep Virgil,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“They insist on their confidence to make it happen, so Liverpool remain confident – relaxed is a big word; it’s still too early to say relaxed.
“You are relaxed when you sign a contract, but Liverpool remain in conversations with Van Dijk and are convinced that they can make it happen with the player.
“At the moment, there’s still nothing agreed, but Virgil van Dijk is speaking to the club. In this case, Liverpool maintain their position.”
Big news for Liverpool
This has been the biggest update in recent weeks for the club. Losing the club captain would be a huge blow, it is a good thing the reds are making an effort to keep him. Fans will be happy to hear all of this. Maybe convincing the 33-year old to sign a new contract could push Salah and Trent to also put pen to paper.
