Former Manchester City star and Premier League legend Sergio Aguero has weighed in on the title race, naming Liverpool as strong contenders to challenge his old club this season under new manager Arne Slot.
After a stellar start to the season, with three wins from three, Slot’s Liverpool has made a seamless transition from the Jürgen Klopp era.
Many expected the Dutchman to struggle after Klopp’s departure, given the German’s immense success at Anfield, winning every major trophy during his tenure. However, Aguero believes the Reds are still a force to be reckoned with.
“Liverpool started really strong, especially considering the end of the Klopp era,” Aguero told Stake.com, via DAZN,when discussing their title chances. “They’ve proved to still be one of the teams to beat to get the title, just like it has been over the past few seasons.”
Aguero acknowledged that while Liverpool have made an impressive start, consistency will be the key to sustaining their title challenge over the course of the season.
He continued: “It’s not about the start of the season, it’s about landing the finish. The Premier League is all about consistency, so that’s the element to make note of.”
Much of Liverpool’s resurgence has been powered by the in-form Mohamed Salah, who has reignited his partnership with Luis Diaz.
The pair has been electric in the early weeks of the season, providing Liverpool with a lethal combination on the wings. Aguero praised their chemistry and experience but also pointed out that City’s new wingers, Jeremy Doku and Savinho, could eventually become serious competition.
“Diaz and Salah have more tenure in the Premier League and more time together than Savinho and Doku,” Aguero said, emphasising the advantage of Liverpool’s duo in terms of understanding and familiarity with their teammates.
“However, neither of [Doku or Savinho] is the best pair in modern times. Salah and Diaz are a scoring combination. They can assist well, and they are very in sync with their teammates. Doku and Savinho need time, but their potential is through the roof.”
As Liverpool and City remain neck and neck in the early stages of the season, Aguero’s assessment of both teams highlights how competitive this title race could be.
With Salah and Diaz firing on all cylinders, Liverpool looks ready to push City all the way once again. However, as Aguero rightly noted, maintaining that level of performance throughout the season will be their greatest challenge.
