Fabrizio Romano has provided an encouraging update on Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool, with the Egyptian star now in the final nine months of his current contract.
Despite growing speculation, Romano suggests that while there’s no guarantee Salah will remain at Anfield beyond this season, negotiations are expected to take place soon.
Salah, 32, recently sparked attention following Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester United when he revealed that the club had yet to initiate contract discussions.
Romano, speaking on The Debrief Podcast, emphasised that while a move away is possible, conversations between the two parties are imminent.
“I think there is still a very concrete chance to see Mo Salah leaving, but what I’m sure about is that there will be conversations,” Romano stated.
“There will be negotiations with Liverpool, so it’s not over. The situation is still very much open. Again, there is a possibility to leave for sure, but it’s not guaranteed.”
Romano added that Salah remains open to discussing a new deal, with key considerations being the length of the contract, the club’s future project, and financial terms. “Obviously, money is also an important factor for the final big contract in Mo Salah’s career,” he explained.
If a new deal isn’t agreed upon by January, Salah will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs for a potential free transfer in the summer of 2025. This situation increases the pressure on Liverpool’s Chief Executive Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes to secure their star player’s future.
The Saudi Pro League has been consistently linked with Salah, but it appears the winger prefers to stay in Europe, where he believes he still has a few more years at the top level.
Salah continues to shine for Liverpool
Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, have made an impressive start to the Premier League season, winning their first three games without conceding a goal. Unsurprisingly, Salah has played a central role in this strong start, scoring in all three matches and registering three assists as well.
The Egyptian is showing no signs of slowing down, maintaining his exceptional fitness and productivity. While Liverpool must decide if Salah’s high-performance levels can continue into his mid-30s, his current form suggests there is no immediate decline in sight.
Salah will aim to extend his excellent start to the season as Liverpool prepare to face Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
